چکیده

Fries et al. (1999), hereafter referred to as FBW, present interesting experimental data showing that biogenic mounds, formed by the conveyor-belt feeding polychaete Cistenides (Pectinaria) gouldii, can be reshaped into asymmetric bedforms at bed shear stresses below the Shields threshold of sediment movement. The ®nal geometry of the current ripples was found to depend on the spatial density of the mounds (number of mounds per unit area), mound height and the imposed bed shear velocity. In a series of ̄ume experiments at different boundary conditions, FBW distinguish between beds with migrating ripples (MR), beds with stationary ripples (SR) and beds without ripples (NR). We believe, however, that such a distinction is ̄awed. Recent advances in the stability analysis of current ripples demonstrate the existence of predictable sequences of current-ripple geometry during evolution towards equilibrium bed morphology (Baas, 1994, 1999; Oost and Baas, 1994). This discussion illustrates how the principles of time-dependent bedform development can be applied to FBW's data. In addition, we discuss the physical parameters governing the generation of current ripples from bed defects, which de®ne the threshold conditions (in terms of mound height, spacing and ̄ow strength) for which biogenic mounds are expected to generate current ripples. Finally, we highlight the inappropriateness of the terms asubcriticalo and asupercriticalo for describing the threshold of sediment movement.

Our previous research e€ort has resulted in a stochastic model that provides an excellent ®t to our experimental data on proliferation and di€erentiation of oligodendrocyte type-2 astrocyte progenitor cells at the clonal level. However, methods for estimation of model parameters and their statistical properties still remain far away from complete exploration. The main technical diculty is that...

The Foundation hotspot–Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (PAR) system is the best documented case of a fast spreading ridge approaching a hotspot and interacting with it. The morphology, crustal structure inferred from gravity anomalies and the chemical composition of the lavas of the axial area of the PAR show evidence of the influence of the hotspot, that is presently located roughly 35 km west of the ...

We have generated a detailed oxygen isotope time-series from the fossil coral reefs from offshore Barbados. The Barbados coral-based record is a unique paleoceanographic data set with an equivalent sedimentation rate in excess of 600 cm/kyr where not only is the annual signal uniquely preserved but seasonality as well. Oxygen isotope values during the late glacial and LGM (16±20 C kyrs; 19±24 c...

In this paper, we establish a mathematical model of two species with stage structure and the relation of predator±prey, to obtain the necessary and sucient condition for the permanence of two species and the extinction of one species or two species. We also obtain the optimal harvesting policy and the threshold of the harvesting for sustainable development. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rig...

We consider a single-species model which is composed of several patches connected by linear migration rates and having logistic growth with a threshold. We show the existence of an aggregating mechanism that allows the survival of a species which is in danger of extinction due to its low population density. Numerical experiments illustrate these results. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights ...
